First date (poem)

M.K. Morozova - prototype of the main character, Nadezhda Lvovna Zarina

“The First Date” is a poem by Andrei Bely , written in Petrograd in 1921. An autobiographical work about youth (the action takes place in 1900), the years of teaching and Russian symbolism , it is one of the main poetic works of Bely. According to Vladislav Khodasevich , one of the first listeners of the poem - “the best written by him (Bely) in verse” [1] .

The poem combines everyday (a wide panorama of Moscow at the turn of the century, images of relatives, music lovers, professors) and mystical plans. The title and plot refer to the poem “Three dates” by Vladimir Solovyov , describing the meeting with “ Eternal Femininity ”. The central episode of the “First Date” is an event that Bely considered the main thing in his life: philosophical insight (in the spirit of Soloviev’s teachings about Sofia ; the Soloviev family is one of the central heroes of the poem) after meeting with an ideal lover. The prototype of the main character is Margarita Kirillovna Morozova , with whom Bely met at symphony concerts in Moscow [1] .

The size of the poem is astrophic (with a free rhyme) 4-foot iambic [1] .

The passage where Bely, speaking of the physical discoveries of the era, uses the phrase “ atomic bomb ” long before the appearance of the corresponding weapon, became famous:

World - torn in Curie's experiments
Atomic, bursting bomb
On electronic jets
Non-embodied hecatomb.
