Biography

The first ever photo portrait portrait. Pictured is John Draper's sister, Dorothy

Born and studied in England , then settled in the United States ; was a professor first in Virginia, then in New York.

In 1839-1840 made a series of photos, becoming one of the pioneers of photography . In particular, in March 1840 he took the first photograph of the moon .

Fame brought him the publication "The history of the mental development of Europe" ("History of the intellectual development of Europe", 1862, Russian. Per. T. 1-2, 1866) and "History of the relationship between Catholicism and science" ("History of Conflict between religion and science, 1874, Russian translation, 1876).

In his study of the history of science, Draper rejected the effects of divine revelation, divine inspiration, and used the evolutionary ideas of C. Darwin and G. Spencer as applied to the development of society. Draper argued that the historical development of the people and the life of the individual is governed by the same natural laws. From this point of view, Draper divided the history of individual peoples into special “centuries” (the age of exploration, the age of faith, the age of reason, etc.), repeated in the lives of all nations.
