Mehmed Dzhelal-Bey ( Ottoman. محمد جلال بك ; genus 1863 , Kyzyltoprak , Kadikoy , vilayet Constantinople - 1926 , Constantinople ) - a prominent official of the Ottoman Empire, who repeatedly held the posts of governor of a number of vilayets and minister. The author of one of the earliest written testimonies of the Armenian genocide published in the Ottoman Empire. [one]
Biography
Born in 1863 in the Kyzyltopop quarter in the city of Constantinople . [2]
From March 1910 to July 1911 - the governor of the Vilayet Erzurum , from June to October 1911 - the Vilayet Edirne , from June 1911 to August 1912 - the Vilayet Aydin , from July 1913 to July 1915. - vilayeta Aleppo , from June to September 1915 - vilayeta Konya and from November 1919 to August 1920 - vilayeta Adana . In addition, from October to December 1911, he served as Minister of the Interior, and from January to July 1913, Minister of Commerce of the Ottoman Empire.
During the Armenian genocide, he served as governor of the vilayets Aleppo and Konya. He tried to prevent mass casualties among the Armenian population during the genocide carried out by the central authorities , describing his efforts as follows:
| Instead of water, blood flowed in the river, and thousands of innocent children, harmless old people, helpless women, strong young men, flowed with this river into oblivion. From December 10 to 13, 1918, he published an article in 3 parts on the front page of “Vakit” newspaper, where he stated that during the so-called “deportation of Armenians” he had made every effort to prevent “abuse” of the Armenians, and was forced as a result this leave the service. [four]
During the occupation of Constantinople , namely from June 1921 to March 1922, he served as the mayor of the capital, where he later died in 1926. His grave was located on the site of the current Taksim Square and was demolished during the reconstruction of the city in 1940 [ 5] [3]
