Francis Preston Blair Jr. ( Eng. Francis Preston Blair, Jr .; February 19, 1821 , Lexington , Kentucky - July 8, 1875 , St. Louis , Missouri ) - American military leader, Union Army general during the years US Civil War . Represented the state of Missouri in the House of Representatives and the Senate , was a candidate for vice president of the Democratic Party in 1868.

Biography
He was the third son of Francis Preston Blair Sr. He graduated from Princeton University in 1841, after which he entered to study law. Since 1842, he practiced law in St. Louis. After the end of the US-Mexican War , he ruled New Mexico for some time, and also became one of the founders of the Missouri Free Land Party .
Although he was a slave owner, he advocated the gradual liberation of slaves, from 1852 to 1856 he was a deputy in the Missouri House of Representatives. In 1856 he was elected to the US House of Representatives from the Republican Party , was defeated in elections in 1858, but was successfully re-elected in 1860; was known for actively supporting the presidential campaign of Abraham Lincoln . After the outbreak of the Civil War, he headed the war committee in the Missouri House of Representatives, and then, leaving parliament, the local federalist volunteer militia organization, made efforts to suppress separatism and keep Missouri within the Union. In 1862 he received the rank of brigadier general, then major general . He participated in the siege of Vicksberg and other battles of the war.
In 1864 he returned to the House of Representatives, where, in particular, he criticized politicians from among the radical Republicans who supported Lincoln's plans for the Reconstruction of the South . In 1868, he ran for US Vice President, but lost the election. Some politicians believed that his dramatic speeches about the dangers of black emancipation cost the Democrats defeat in this election. In 1870 he was elected senator, but failed to be re-elected in 1872.
In 1872, Blair suffered a paralyzing stroke, but until his death he continued to engage in public policy.
