The 1979 Women's World Basketball Championship was held in the Republic of Korea from April 29 to May 13 in Seoul .

It was the 8th tournament in a row. First held in Asia. The championship was attended by 12 teams. The teams of the socialist camp announced a boycott of the World Cup in South Korea - as a result of the Cold War.
The winner was the US women's basketball team following the group finals. This is the third world title.

Format
The format of the tournament has not changed. The exception is that instead of the owner of the championship, the championship began with the final tournament - the strongest team (US team).
- Qualifying group tournament (3 groups of 4 teams) to determine 6 (six) finalists.
- Finalists and the strongest championship team in the group tournament determined the winners (taking into account the results of the games between the rivals who played in the qualifying tournament). The losers in the qualifying tournament in the qualification held the game for 8-12 places.
Members
For the first time the following teams participated in the World Cup:
- The representative from FIBA Europe is the Netherlands team in connection with the refusal for political reasons of the strongest European teams included in the socialist camp.
- The representative from FIBA Asia is the Malaysian team (4th place of the Asian Championship in 1978) in connection with the refusal for political reasons the Chinese team.
- The representative from FIBA of South America is the national team of Bolivia (2nd place of the South American Championship of 1978) in connection with the refusal of the Mexican team.
