Hugo Ibelin (1255–1315)

Hugo Ibelin (c. 1255 - June 21, 1315 , Kyrenia ) is a representative of the influential Cypriot feudal family Ibelin , one of the participants in the rebellion of the barons against King Henry II de Lusignan and the establishment of the regency in 1306 .

Hugo Ibelin was the fifth and youngest son of the Seneschal of the Kingdom of Cyprus, Baldwin Ibelin and Alice Befsan. In 1303 or 1304, with the permission of Pope Boniface VIII, married Alice Le Thor, daughter of Jean Le Thor [1] .

Almost nothing was known about the activities of Hugo Ibelin at the royal court until 1306 , when he took an active part in a conspiracy aimed at removing the sick king Henry II de Lusignan from the power and establishing the regency of his brother Amory of Tire . One of the leaders of the conspiracy was his nephew, the son of King Balian Ibelin , who bore the title of Prince of Galilee [2] . According to the chronicle of Leontius Mahera , it was Hugo Ibelin, on behalf of the conspirators, who, on April 26, 1306, read a charter in the royal palace to the king, people and seniors on the appointment of regency and the transfer of control of the kingdom to Amori of Tire [3] . After that, Hugo Ibelin was included in the retinue of the regent Amori [4] .

After the assassination of the regent Amory of Tire in 1310 and the return of power to King Hugo, Ibelin probably fell into disgrace. In 1312, he was arrested by order of King Henry II and thrown into prison in the dungeons of Kyrenia , where he died of starvation three years later. The Amadi Chronicle reports that Hugo Ibelin was found dead in one of Kyrenia's dungeons on June 21 (or July 21 ), 1315 . The body of Hugo was buried in the church of St. Anthony [1] .

In the marriage of Hugo Ibelin with Alice le Thor, three children were born:

  • Baldwin (b. 1304/1307 );
  • Maria ( 1304/1307 - after 1347 ), from 1325 she was married to Baldwin of Bethsan
  • Margarita ( 1304/1307 - after 1343 ), from approx. 1320 was married to the lord Arsuf Balian V Ibelin [1] .
