Biography

Born in a family of Jewish immigrants from Minsk, Harry and Rosa Marshak [5] . Mother worked as a seamstress, father as a cutter (later as a street greengrocer) [6] . In 1939-1970 He taught at the University of Rochester (since 1949 - professor), in 1970-1979 - president of New York University (Stony Brook), since 1979 - professor at the Polytechnic Institute in Blacksburg (Virginia). In 1942-1943 worked in the radiation laboratory of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, in 1943-1944. - in Montreal, and in 1944-1946. - in the Los Alamos laboratories.

Works on nuclear physics and elementary particle physics , in particular meson physics, theory of weak interaction . Investigated the energy sources of stars, atomic nuclei, neutron diffusion.

In 1940, the idea of the interaction of nucleons through the emission and absorption of pairs of particles was applied to meson pairs, in 1947, together with X. Bethe predicted the existence of two different types of mesons. In 1957, together with E. Sudarshan (independently of M. Gell-Mann and R. Feynman ) he developed a universal theory of weak interactions. In 1959, together with S. Okubo, he postulated the lepton-hadron analogy, and in 1960-1961. proposed a nonlinear theory of elementary particles.
