The Fifth USSR Championship in international drafts among men was held in Kiev in May 1959 according to the round robin system. It was attended by 18 athletes. For the victory, 1 point was given, for a draw ½ points and 0 for defeat. Having scored 11½ points, Vyacheslav Shchegolev and Mikhail Korhov held an extra match in early June 1959, following which Vyacheslav Shchegolev became the country's champion. The second place was taken by Mikhail Korhov. In third place is Max Shavel . The winner of the championship received the right to participate in the Candidates' Tournament in Monaco, which began in June 1959. [1] But due to the late end of an additional match, Shchegolev did not manage to take part in the tournament of applicants. [2]
