History
Milford was founded in 1796 after the War of Independence by Judge John Biddys, one of the four visiting judges of Pennsylvania. He named the settlement after his ancestral home in Wales .
Milford has a large number of significant historic buildings, most of which were built in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Some of them are listed on the National Register of Historic Places , while many others are included in the historic district of Milford, also listed on the Register. 655 buildings in the area, 400 of which are considered historically significant. The area is characterized by a variety of late Victorian architecture .
The city of Milford houses the Gray Towers, the home of Gifford Pinchot, an outstanding conservationist, two-time governor of Pennsylvania, and the first head of the US Forest Service. The building is a national historical monument .
From 1904 to 1926, the Gray Towers was the summer field site for the Yale University ’s School of Forestry, along with Forest Hall, a commercial building that was adapted and expanded for this purpose. Jervis Gordon's Mill, the Fosher Hotel, the Metz Artificial Ice Factory and the Pike County Courthouse are also listed on the National Register of Historic Places . Nearby is the “Arisb”, the home of Charles S. Pierce , an outstanding logician, philosopher and scholar of the late 19th century , a national historical monument of the United States .
The collection of the Pike County Historical Society Museum in Milford includes the flag of Lincoln, which hung in the presidential box of Abraham Lincoln at the Ford Theater on the night of his assassination . The flag was crumpled and placed under the head of the president, and is still soiled in his blood. It was kept by the assistant director Thomas Gurli. He passed it on to his daughter Ginny, an actress who was engaged in the play “My American Cousin” in the theater that evening. She later moved to Milford, and the flag was donated to the museum after her death.
In culture
In Milford, several silent films were filmed by D.W. Griffith in the early 1900s, including The Informator in 1912 with Mary Pickford , Lillian Gish and Lionel Barrymore . In 1956, the Milford science fiction writers seminar was held here, founded by Damon Knight , Keith Wilhelm and James Blish , who at that time lived in Milford.
