Story

The film consists of nine interviews with student leaders, union leaders and members of the Singapore Communist Party , who fought against colonialism, received long prison sentences from the new authorities, expelled from their country in the 1960s and 1970s, and to this day have no right to return. unless they die and their relatives bring their ashes back. Fifty years later, despite moving to the UK , Malaysia and Thailand , it becomes clear to them that Singapore is still holding them, and the thought of returning home all the time is in their hearts and minds. They organize a trip to Malaysia, the closest neighbor of Singapore, where they attend holidays, memorials and stay in a hotel whose windows overlook their homeland [1] .

Impressions and rental

The premiere of the film took place on October 3, 2013 at the 18th Busan International Film Festival in South Korea , and then it was shown at the Dubai Film Festival where Tang Ping Ping received the prize for best director in documentary [2] . Later, screenings were shown at the 64th Berlin Film Festival [3] , as well as other well-known film forums in Bangkok , Seoul , Kuala Lumpur and New York [4] . After that, Tan Pin Pin wanted to present her picture at the end of September 2014 at the festival FreedomFilmFest [5] at the National University of Singapore , on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the country's independence [6] . However, the Office for the Development of Media Singapore concluded that the film shows the history of the state in a distorted form, its content “threatens national security”, and banned the distribution and public viewing of the film [7] [8] [9] . Tan Ping Pin herself was upset when she learned about the decision of the authorities, and wrote on a Facebook page: “With my film I wanted to open a discussion that would help us better understand ourselves as a nation” [10] .
