Biography

Pavel Khvostov was born on December 18, 1906 in the village of Kamenka (now - Zadonsky district of the Lipetsk region ). He graduated from a rural school. In 1928, Khvostov was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army . In 1932, he graduated from the Moscow Military Engineering School . Since the beginning of World War II - on its fronts [1] .

By September 1943, Colonel Pavel Khvostov was the deputy commander and at the same time the chief of the engineering forces of the 57th Army of the Southwestern Front . He distinguished himself during the crossing of the Seversky Donets , Uda and Dnieper . Under his direct supervision, crossings for army units were organized as soon as possible, and a bridge over the Dnieper was built in the Verkhnedneprovsk area [1] . He participated in the Kursk and Stalingrad battles, took part in defensive battles on the Western Front , then on the South West .

The last battle for Pavel Khvostov occurred precisely at the crossing of Verkhnedneprovsk . October 21, 1943 he was instructed to build a bridge across the Dnieper village Shulgovka Dnepropetrovsk region . The length of the bridge was 700 meters, installation was carried out with artillery and aircraft shelling and bombing of the enemy. The bridge was commissioned on time, Soviet military equipment began to move along it to the west bank.

Hitler’s troops were able to disable the bridge through new shelling. Pavel Tails, under heavy shelling, led the repair of the crossing and coped with the task. After this, shelling was repeated and one of the shells fell into the group of Soviet officers, in which was Khvostov Pavel Nikitovich. He received severe injuries to the head and abdomen. For a week in the medical battalion there was a struggle for life. Subsequently, when the condition stabilized, he was sent by plane to Kharkov, then to Moscow.

By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of December 20, 1943, Colonel Pavel Khvostov was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal [1] .

In 1947, Khvostov was sacked. He lived and worked in Zadonsk . He died on July 31, 1977, was buried in the village of Tyunino, Zadonsky district [1] .

In Zadonsk, he was given a house from the state, including a double plot of land.

He was also awarded the Orders of the Red Star and the Badge of Honor , along with a number of medals [1] .

In the city of Zadonsk , a street was named in honor of Pavel Khvostov, a stele was erected with its bas-relief in the avenue of heroes of the Soviet Union. On his grave in the cemetery near Zadonsk, there is an obelisk of red granite with a bust on top.
