Biography
Mikhail Khvatkov was born on November 24, 1925 in the village of Lugovoye (now within the boundaries of Ulyanovsk ). After finishing seven classes of the school he worked on a collective farm . In 1943, Khvatkov was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. From the same year - on the fronts of World War II [1] .
By June 1944, the Guard Corporal Mikhail Khvatkov was the sapper of the 76th separate guard engineer battalion of the 67th Guards Rifle Division of the 6th Guards Army of the 1st Baltic Front . He distinguished himself during the liberation of the Vitebsk region of the Byelorussian SSR . June 22, 1944 Khvatkov participated in the breakthrough of the German defense in the vicinity of the village of Sirotino, Shumilinsky district , personally made two passes in German fields, neutralizing 64 mines. On June 24, 1944, he made a raft and transported about 60 soldiers and commanders with weapons across the Western Dvina in the village of Uzrechye in the Beshenkovichi district over the next day, and transported the wounded during return flights. June 25, 1944 Khvatkov died in battle [1] .
He was buried in the village of Uzrechye in a mass grave , where a memorial complex was built in memory of the dead soldiers of the 6th Guards Army.
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated March 24, 1945, Corporal Mikhail Khvatkov was posthumously awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union . He was also awarded the Order of Lenin and a medal [1] .
A school and a street in Ulyanovsk were named in honor of Khvatkov, a bust was installed in his native village [1] .
