Distribution
Range: Hainan Island in China . It lives at altitudes from sea level to about 300 m. It inhabits meadows.
Behavior
They lead a solitary lifestyle, active at night or at dusk. Dense bushes serve as their refuge.
Morphological characters
Maximum body length 40.0 cm, weight not more than 1.5 kg. The head is small and round. The ears are long, they are longer than the hind legs. The upper part of the tail is black, the lower part is white. The Hainan hare is more contrastingly colored than most other species: the back is brownish-black with white, the belly is white, the fur on the sides is a mixture of brownish yellow and brownish white, limbs are dark brown.
