He worked at the University of Munich (since 1868 - professor, in 1899 - rector). In addition, he served as the curator of the Bavarian science museum and was a member of the Munich Academy of Sciences.
Work on optics and spectroscopy . He studied the interference , diffraction and dispersion of light, luminescence .
