IAAF Continental Cup 2010

The 1st IAAF Continental Cup was held September 4–5, 2010 at the Polud Stadium in Split , Croatia . These competitions replaced the traditional World Cup in Athletics , which was held 10 times between 1977 and 2006. Four continental teams were formed to participate in the tournament: Europe, America, Africa and Asia + Oceania. Over the course of two days, the participants fought for a common team victory following the results of 40 athletics disciplines.

The Croatian high jumper Blanca Vlašić set a new competition record of 2.05 m in front of her stands and made an attempt to break the world record . Three attempts at an altitude of 2.10 m were unsuccessful.

Olga Rypakova from Kazakhstan set a new triple jump record in Asia - 15.25 m. This result was the 13th in the history of this type of athletics, only 6 women jumped next to Rypakova [1] .

Format

Compared to the World Cup, the new tournament has undergone significant changes in the format of the event. Now, only teams from four continents took part in it, each of which exhibited 2 participants in each of the 40 disciplines of the Cup (3 participants were allowed to enter the long and medium distances, two best results were counted). The system of scoring has remained the same (1st place - 8 points, 2nd place - 7 points ... 8th place - 1 point).

The selection of participants in the team was carried out by continental athletics federations. The European team was determined by the results of the European Championship 2010 , the African team - the African Championship 2010 , America and Asia with Oceania were completed based on the rating of the season.

Separate men's and women's counts were abolished, now the teams fought for one Cup [2] .

Team Championship

According to the results of two days of struggle, the European team won, gaining 429 points, America lagged just 9.5 points (419.5) behind. However, a few years after a series of doping disqualifications and cancellation of the results, the competition results were reviewed, and four years before the start of the next Continental Cup, the main trophy of 2010 was handed over to the American team [3] .

b On February 1, 2019, it became known that the Sports Arbitration Court, on the basis of McLaren's report and testimony of Grigory Rodchenkov, found 12 Russian athletes guilty of violating anti-doping rules. Among them was a 400-meter runner Tatyana Firova . All its results from August 20, 2008 to December 31, 2012 were canceled, including at the Continental Cup - 2010 as part of the European team: third place at a distance of 400 meters with a score of 50.45 and second place in the relay 4 × 400 meters ( Ksenia Ustalova , Antonina Krivoshapka , Libania Grenot , Tatyana Firova ) with the result of 3.26.58 [5] .
On February 10, 2017, the Sports Arbitration Court decided to disqualify the Russian athlete Maria Savinova . Based on the biological passport indicators, it was concluded that the athlete used doping. Savinova was disqualified for four years, and her results after July 26, 2010 were canceled, including third place in the 2010 Continental Cup in the 800-meter race with a score of 1.58.27 [6] .
d In 2013, a Turkish runner of Ethiopian origin Alemitu Bekele was disqualified on the basis of a biological passport . In connection with this violation of the anti-doping rules, the athlete’s performances were canceled from August 17, 2009, including the second place in the 2010 Continental Cup in the 3000-meter race with a score of 9.04.08 [7] .
e On November 15, 2017, the IAAF announced the annulment of the results of the Belarusian nuclear pluralist Nadezhda Ostapchuk . Her doping test taken at the 2008 Olympics , after rechecking eight years later, turned out to be positive. Performances of the athlete from August 16, 2008 to August 5, 2012 were canceled, including the second place in the Continental Cup - 2010 with a score of 20.18 m [8] .
f On September 5, 2018, the All-Russian Athletics Federation announced a 4-year suspension of javelin thrower Maria Abakumova . After rechecking her doping tests from the 2008 Olympics and the 2011 World Cup, banned turinabol was discovered in them. The athlete refused the appeal; all her performances from August 21, 2008 to August 20, 2012 were canceled, including the first place in the Continental Cup in 2010 with a record of competitions of 68.14 m [9] .
