Biography
Born in the Boltoginsky settlement of the Churapchinsky ulus of the Yakut ASSR.
He graduated from the Yakutsk School of Music and Art (1957), graphic department of the Moscow State Art Institute. V.I. Surikova (workshop of E.A. Kibrik ) (1963).
From 1963 to 1968 teacher of the Yakut art school.
Member of the Union of Artists of the USSR since 1964
In 1968-1979 and in 1991-1994. - Chairman of the Board of the Union of Artists of the YAASSR.
In 1998-2001 - Director of the Yakutsk branch of the Krasnoyarsk State Art Institute, since 2001, Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts of the Arctic State Institute of Arts and Culture, Professor of the Department of Graphics.
Member of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of the 8th convocation (1970), Deputy of the Supreme Council of the Yakut ASSR of the 9th convocation (1975).
Afanasy Munkhalov is a participant in international exhibitions in 26 countries. The artist's works are stored in the collections of large museums: in the Tretyakov Gallery, the Museum of Fine Arts. A. Pushkin, the Museum of Oriental Cultures in Moscow, the Russian Museum of St. Petersburg, the National Art Museum of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), the Dresden Art Gallery in Germany, in many private collections.

- Honored Artist of the RSFSR (1972).
- People's Artist of the RSFSR (1982).
- Silver medal of the Russian Academy of Arts (2005).
- Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Arts (2012).
- Honorary citizen of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) .
