About the album

Record and Release

In an August 2012 interview with the Artisan News Service during the Rockstar Mayhem Festival , Motörhead drummer Mickey Dee stated that the group had written lyrics for several new songs while working on The Wörld Is Yours album [10] , and is currently continuing prepare the basis for future studio material. Then the musician added that the new record will be recorded and released in 2013 [10] . In an interview with Classic Rock Revisited, journalist Jeb Wright asked Motörhead leader Ian “Lemmy” Kilmister about recording a possible studio album. Lemmy said that he was discussing the recording with the rest of the band and that "it would be interesting to do." Further, the musician noted that if the disc does come out, it will satisfy the musical tastes of the audience, and the famous “War-Pig” mascot character will traditionally be on the cover [11] .

At the end of October 2012, the musicians officially confirmed that they plan to return to the studio in early 2013 [12] . Cameron Webb, who had already produced Motörhead's previous four studio work, again joined the band for collaboration. On February 28, 2013 Motörhead began recording the record [13] . On June 18, 2013, the name of the disc “Aftershock” was released [14] . The release was expected to take place in the summer [15] [16] , but the release was postponed to the fall of 2013. October 18 Aftershock was released in Germany , October 21 in the UK and Europe , and on October 23 the album went on sale in the US [17] .

Concert Tour

Even before the release of Aftershock, Motörhead announced that they had performed live in support of the album. The start of the tour was planned in November 2013, but all the concerts were postponed to February and March 2014 due to Lemmy’s poor health due to diabetes . In January 2014, the musicians announced the cancellation of all upcoming performances [18] . The upcoming tour was only in the summer; the group held concerts in the USA , Great Britain , France , Switzerland , Italy , Germany [19] . July 25 Motörhead performed in Russia ; the concert was held in Moscow , in the Crocus City Hall concert hall [20] [21] .

Critical Reviews and Sales

The album received mostly positive reviews from music publications. Many critics praised the sound of Aftershock , which reviewers believe is close to Motörhead’s earlier work [2] [3] [4] [22] . Hitch Stimer from Pitchfork Media noted that Aftershock is not new. However, Stimer called the album “truly exciting” and added: they [Motörhead] still do it well [6] . Revolver Magazine also met the record positively; The editors praised the way the musicians performed on the album. MetalSucks reviewer Sammy O'Hagar rated the album 4 stars out of a possible 5; he commented on the fact that the group, as before, continues to play quite “heavy” and “growling” music [5] . Rolling Stone Russia reviewer Boris Dahl gave the same rating; he wrote that “Motörhead’s already 21 CD sounds much livelier than the previous misanthropic experience of The World Is Your ” [9] . The editorial board of the USA Today Aftershock newspaper was recognized as the "album of the week" [23] .

In the first week of sales in the United States, the disc sold 11,000 copies [24] , thus taking 22nd place on the Billboard 200 chart [25] .
