The championship was also a qualifying tournament for the selection of participants in field hockey competitions at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal . Qualification went to the teams that took the first three places.
For the first time in its history, the national team of Spain became the winners of the championship, winning the German national team in the final with a score of 1: 0. The bronze medalist of the championship was the Netherlands national team , having beaten the England national team with a 4-1 score in the match for 3rd place.
The championship was attended by 18 teams, divided into four groups (two groups of 5 teams and two groups of 4 teams each), after which the 8 best teams played according to the “Olympic system” (quarter finals, semi-finals, final). Starting from the next championship in 1978 , the formula of the rally has changed: the number of teams has decreased to 12, two groups of 6 teams each, the two best teams go straight to the semifinals.
