Critical reviews of contemporaries were mixed: Literary Gazette , Edinburgh Magazine took the book warmly. Lady Hermione's side story was criticized. [1] The Examiner and The Gentleman's Magazine found him weak, in particular, criticizing the “lack of unity”. [2] [1] Sales were, however, very high. According to publisher Scott Archibald Constable , the first 7,000 copies in London were sold out on the morning of the first day, people read a book on the streets. [one]
Creation History
Almost immediately after the completion of the Pirate in October 1821, Scott began work on a new book. [1] In the preface to the novel, he writes:
After I managed to arouse, to some extent, the reader’s interest in the fate of a woman who was deprived of the dignity that almost any heroine could claim, I succumbed to the temptation and chose a person as unpromising as the hero of my subsequent novel.
The first volume was completed before the Christmas holidays, Scott relied on his own knowledge and materials sent by the publisher Archibald Constable . In March 1822, the novel was almost finished. [one]
