Biography

I was atrocious at the age of five; my sister was engaged in his upbringing. In 1906 he was accepted into a theological seminary in Mexico City, where he excelled in languages ​​in the first place: he began to study Latin, Ancient Greek and Hebrew. In 1917 he accepted the rank of priest and was sent to the parish of Shilotepek, where they mostly lived in Otomi . There he learned Nahuatl and became interested in pre-Columbian cultures, in his ward he helped the Indians in cultural and economic development, contributed to the development of education and health care. Since 1924 - Professor of Humanities and Rhetoric at the Mexico City Seminary. Since the 1940s, it began to actively publish, without interrupting the priestly ministry in different parishes.

In 1952 he was elected an honorary member of the Mexican Academy of Language and Literature, and in 1954 he became a full member of the Academy. In 1956, on the 400th anniversary of the National Autonomous University of Mexico, he received a doctorate from Honoris Causa , then he went to work at the Institute of Historical Research and headed a seminar on the culture of Nahua. In 1962 he was elected a full member of the Mexican Academy of History, at the same time awarded the Medal by Belisario Dominguez. In 1965 he was awarded the National Prize for Literature.

Among the scientific works stand out the reprints of the “General History of New Spain Things” by Bernardino de Sahagun , “The History of Nahua Literature” in 2 volumes, and “The Poetry of Nahua” in 3 volumes. Between the years 1962-1966, translated into Spanish, all the tragedies and comedies of Aeschylus , Sophocles , Euripides and Aristophanes .
