From Soviet times until the spring of 2017 it was called Tashkent Street , in honor of the city of Tashkent . In the days of the Russian Empire and the Bukhara Emirate , as well as in the first decades of the existence of the USSR , according to some sources, the street was called Siyabskoy from the name of the Siyab bazaar and the Siyab river, which flows in relative proximity (several kilometers) from the street.

History
The street is one of the oldest in the city. It arose back in the Middle Ages, and by the Soviet period acquired almost its current shape on the city map. It housed the shops of merchants, money changers and buyers, workshops of artisans, dwellings of people ( mahalla ) and rulers, madrassas and mosques , cemeteries . Many historical events of the Middle Ages , times of the Russian Empire and the USSR are connected with the street.
Location
Islam Karimov Street begins in the center of Samarkand , from the intersection with Registan Street and stretches northeast to the Samarkand Ring Road, crossing the ancient settlement Afrasiab , to the place where the city’s now-unrepresented Tashkent gate was once located. A small part of the street passes through the pedestrian bridge built in 2017 over one of the largest streets of the city - Shahi Zinda Street. From the first (southern) half of the street there are numerous small streets and dead ends where the mahallas begin. The second or northern part passes through the ancient settlement Afrasiab.
The street intersects with the following streets: Registan, Bukhara, Koshkhavuz, Bibi-Khanum, Abu Lays Samarkandi, Khudzhumskaya, Shahi-Zinda, Afrasiab, Khazret-Khizr, Samarkand ring road.
Transport
Now most of the street is pedestrianized. From Soviet times until the early 1990s , trolleybuses and buses ran along the street. Until the mid -2000s taxis , shuttles , passenger and freight horse and donkey carriages ran. The trolleybus ring was located next to the Siyab bazaar. In 1947 - 1973, there was a tram ring near the Sherdor Madrasah, and the street could be reached by tram. Tram traffic was revived in 2017 (See Samarkand Tram article), and now the final stop of the tram line is located in close proximity to the middle part of the street, on Shahi-Zinda Street, under the automobile bridge.
In 2009, it was decided to turn the first and main part of the street (from the intersection with Registan Street to the intersection with Shahi-Zinda Street) pedestrian and convenient for tourists. After some time, electric cars were launched on this part of the street, which still operate today. In 2017, almost half of the remaining part of the street, on which the Hazret-Khizr mosque, the mausoleum of Islam Karimov, the mausoleum of Makhsumbobo, and the entrances to the cemeteries of Shahi-Zinda and Hazret-Khizr are located , became pedestrian. Cars are allowed on the rest of the street, and electric vehicles run from public transport to the mausoleum of Khoja Daniyar , which is located at the end of the street, and which does not belong to Islam Karimov Street.
