Liutger (Earl of Harzgau)

Liutger (died October 9, 1033 near Verben ) is a count in Harzgau , Derlingau , Nordturinggau and Balsamgau . A possible ancestor of Supplinburgs . Details

The first information about Liutger dates back to the beginning of the 11th century. According to Titmar of Merseburg, Emperor Otton III ousted Rikdag, the uncle of the mother of Margrave Lothar , from the post of count in Harzgau and appointed Liutger, vassal of Halberstadt bishop Arnulf. During the election of the king in 1002, the future king Henry II promised Lothar to reinstate the Rikdag in office in exchange for support. What soon happened - the Rikdag is mentioned as a count in Harzgau in 1003, and then in 1009.

In the imperial letter of 1013, Liutger is mentioned as a count in Derlingau and Nordturinggau. In the letter of 1021 - as a count in Nordturinggau. It is possible that the same Liutger was mentioned in letters of 1022 and 1031 as a count in Harzgau. If we consider this Liutger to be identical to Liutger from the message of Titmar, it turns out that he managed to return Harzgau. According to the Hildesheim annals, a certain Earl of Liutger died in 1033 in the battle with the Ruthenians near Verbena. The memory of some Count Liutger was noted in the Lunenburg synodic on October 9th. This is probably Liutger who died in 1033.

Origin

In the original sources, the origin of Liutger is not indicated. According to one hypothesis, Liutger, a count in Harzgau in 1022-1033, was the son of Lothar III von Walbeck , Werner's brother, not named by Titmar by name. If we assume that all references to Liutger in 1002-1033 refer to the same person, then this is impossible. But some connection with the Valbek house can be allowed. Reinhard Wenskus suggested that Liutger, mentioned in 1002-1033, was the son of Frederick III Earl in Harzgau.

Descendants

Suppleburger Ancestor

The name Liutger, who was sometimes called the emperor Lothar of Supplinburg , possessions in Nordturingau and Harzgau, which later passed to Count Bernhard, the grandfather of Emperor Lothar II, suggests that Liutger was the ancestor of the Supplinburgs, probably the father of Bernhard, as well as the count of Lothar.

Children:

  • Bernhard (d. After 1069), Earl of Nordturinggau and Harzgau, father of Gebhard of Supplinburg , grandfather of Emperor Lothar II.
  • Lothar (mentioned in 1049–1063), Earl of Nordturinggau, heir to part of the possessions of Margrave Northern Mark Bernhard II . Its origin is unclear. It is attributed both to the Supplinburgs and to the Askanias , the Staden and the Walbek House.

Descendant of the Valbekov

If we accept the hypothesis of the Walbeckian origin of Liutger, he becomes a candidate for the fathers of Count Siegfried II von Walbeck, the father of Oda von Walbeck (d. 1152), whose genealogy was obviously confused by the Saxon annalist (according to the Saxon annalist Oda was the daughter of Siegfried von Walbeck (mind 991) )

Children:

  • Siegfried (up. 1068, 1083), Count of Walbeck, Count of Nordturinggau. Father Oda von Walbeck. As Count Valbeka is mentioned only in a forged letter of 1087.

Andreas Thiele suggested that Liutger was both a descendant of the Walbeck and ancestor of the Suppleburgs, the son of Lothar III von Walbeck and the father of Bernhard and Siegfried. Now this point of view is unpopular.
