History
The college was founded in 1249 by William of Durham, who left money to support several students. For a long time it was believed that the college was even older - according to legend, subsequently refuted, the founder of the college was King Alfred .
Until the sixteenth century, college only studied theology. The medieval college buildings were replaced by the new Main Quadrant in 1640; in 1719, the Radcliffe Quadrant was added to it.
One of the main attractions of the college is a monument to the poet Shelley , who studied here for less than a year and was expelled for atheism. The life-size statue of Edward Onslow Ford depicts a drowned poet and was donated to Lady Shelley College in 1894.
Since 1979, women have been accepted to college as students.
