Demonax crater ( Latin Demonax ) is a huge ancient impact crater in the southern polar region of the visible side of the moon . The name was given in honor of the ancient Greek philosopher Demonaks (about 70-170) and approved by the International Astronomical Union in 1935. The formation of the crater belongs to the nectarian period [1] .

Crater Description
The nearest neighbors of the crater are Schomberger Crater in the west; Boguslavsky crater in the northwest; Bussengo crater in the north; crater Neymeyer in the north-northeast; crater Hale in the northeast; Ganswindt crater in the east; the craters Von Beyer and Svedberg in the south-southeast, as well as the crater Scott in the south-west [2] . The selenographic coordinates of the center of the crater are , diameter 121.93 km [3] , depth 5 km [4] .
The crater has a close to circular shape, for a long time of its existence it has been significantly destroyed. The shaft is covered with a multitude of craters of various sizes, especially the craters in the southeast part of the shaft stand out. The inner slope of the shaft with the remains of a terrace-like structure, especially noticeable in the western part. The height of the shaft above the surrounding terrain reaches 1640 m [1] , the volume of the crater is approximately 17,500 km³ [1] . The bottom of the crater is flooded with lava , even with the exception of the hilly northern part. In the center of the bowl is a group of peaks.
Due to its location near the south pole of the moon, the crater has a distorted shape when viewed from the Earth . Due to the low-light illumination, the northern part of the bowl and the inner slope of the crater is almost always in the shade.
