History

In order to develop uncivilized territories near the western border of the United States and after traveling 1300 miles through the Great Plains , on July 24, 1847, the second president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Brigham Young, stopped his wagon near the site on which Salt Lake City was founded and said: "This is the right place. Come here ”, thus marking the beginning of the migration of Mormons to the Salt Lake Valley [1] [2] [3] . Since then, July 24 has been celebrated annually in Utah as Pioneer Day [4] .

Until 1915, at the place where Brigham Young's wagon stopped, there was a simple wooden cross [1] . In 1917, Brigham Roberts and a squad of boy scouts erected a wooden monument at this place. In 1921, it was replaced by a white stone obelisk, still standing east of the 1917 monument. The history of the existing monument began in 1937, when the sculptor and grandson of Brigham Young, Mahonri Young by order of the Utah government and a commission of representatives from various faiths, the design of a new, larger monument was entrusted. On July 24, 1947, on the 100th anniversary of the migration of pioneers to the valley, the monument was unveiled by the eighth president of the Church, George Albert Smith in the presence of almost 50 thousand people [5] . In 1957, a group of private individuals bought most of the land around this place and gave it to the state to prevent its commercial use, as a result of which a park of more than 1,500 acres was created there [6] . In 2007, the monument was restored [7] .

Composition

View of the monument, 2009.

The monument is a sculptural composition of granite and bronze 60 feet (18 meters) and 86 feet (26 meters) long, consisting of three large pedestals and two steles between them. On the central and highest pedestal are standing figures of Heber Kimball , Brigham Young and Wilford Woodruff . Just below the inscription "This is the place" ( Eng. This is the Place ). On two sides from below it is decorated with bas-reliefs of galloping nine horsemen, and at the base with two figures - Orson Pratt (on a horse) and Erastus Shaw (standing) waving hats in greeting. On their pedestal are quotes from the Book of Isaiah 2: 2 , 35: 1 :

Hosanna! Hosanna! Hosanna! For God and the Lamb! Amen! Amen! Amen! And in the last days, the mountain of the house of the Lord will be put at the head of the mountains and rise above the hills, and all the nations will flow to it. The desert and dry land will rejoice, and the uninhabited country will rejoice and will blossom like a daffodil.

Original text
HOSANNAH! HOSANNAH! HOSANNAH! TO GOD AND THE LAMB! AMEN! AMEN! AMEN! AND THE MOUNTAIN OF THE LORD'S HOUSE SHALL BE ESTABLISHED IN THE TOP OF THE MOUNTAINS AND SHALL BE EXHALTED ABOVE THE HILLS AND ALL NATIONS SHALL FLOW UNTO IT. THE WILDERNESS AND THE SOLITARY PLACE SHALL BE GLAD FOR THEM, AND THE DESERT SHALL REJOICE AND BLOSSOM AS THE ROSE.

At the base is a plate about the creation and history of the monument. On two side stelae are depicted strings of carts of pioneers with families. On their reverse side are six iconic figures of state history: Etienne Provo , Vashaki , Peter Skinini Ogden , Benjamin Bonneville , Jan Desmet , John Fremont . On two extreme pedestals are sculptural groups of settlers, including members of the Spanish expedition 1776, pioneers from the Donner squad , as well as trappers from the American Fur Company , led by William Ashley [8] [9] .
