History

Despite the presence of several settlements on the territory of the modern city, it was founded only at the beginning of the Middle Ages . Its name is derived from the Old English hām (home, possession) and the name of the river Rother . The city was founded as one of the key Saxon market cities on the Roman road near fords on the Don River [4] .

Towards the end of the Saxon period, Rotherham was the center of a large parish located on both sides of the river.

In the 1480s, the Archbishop of York , Thomas Rotherham , who came from the city, insisted on the construction of the College of Jesus , where theology, singing, grammar, and writing were studied [5] . The college was destroyed in the middle of the 16th century, but gave the name to the street.

Since Roman times, the city has been mining and processing iron. Local iron and steel were highly regarded for their strength. For example, ship guns were made here, including for the HMS Victory . The iron industry of the city remained after the industrial revolution . At the beginning of the 19th century, numerous iron processing enterprises opened here: Effingham Ironworks ( Yates, Haywood & Co ), Parkgate Ironworks and others.

Since 1751, the glass industry developed. Beatson Clark & Co has exported medical glass containers to various countries.

The traditional industry of the city is the manufacture of flour from grain.

In 2007, the city was heavily flooded ( Flooding in Britain in the summer of 2007 ).

In the same year, he launched the Rotherham Renaissance urban regeneration project.

In August 2014, the city found itself at the center of a scandal involving the sexual exploitation of children. Between 1997 and 2013, it was estimated that 1.4 thousand children (mostly white teenage girls who were victims of gangs of Pakistani origin) were affected [6] [7] [8] .
