History

Monument at the crossroads of streets, 1905 .

The idea of creating the monument was first voiced in December 1891 , when, on behalf of the fourth president of the Church, Wilford Woodruff and his advisers, George Cannon and Joseph F. Smith Sr. , an advisory board was formed to conclude a contract with sculptor Cyrus Dallin , born in Utah. At the same time, fundraising was announced among parishioners of the Church. As a result, 25 thousand US dollars were collected, and Dallin completed the work on time [3] .

The monument was first shown to the public at the World Exhibition in Chicago , which was held from May 1 to October 30, 1893 . Then he was placed for a short time in the southeast corner of Temple Square in Salt Lake City . Later, they decided to move the monument to a more convenient place, but because of the slow construction of the granite basement and the final design of the composition, in which Brigham Young's son and Church architect Don Carlos Young participated As well as the grandson of Dick Young, the discovery was rescheduled for a late date. On July 20, 1897, the monument was inaugurated on a 25 by 25 foot section in the center of the intersection of Main and South Temple Streets [4] . There he stood until 1993 , when he was moved north to his current place between the Salt Lake Temple and the Joseph Smith Memorial Building , and opened on November 15 [3] [5] .

Composition

The base of the granite monument is twenty-five feet (7.62 meters). On the front side there is a bronze bas-relief, on which a full-length Mormon pioneer with his wife and child is depicted. A little lower is a plate with the name of the monument, and in honor of what it is installed. On the left and right edges of the monument are sculptures in a sitting position - a settler with a gun lying on his knees and an Indian with a staff in his hand, respectively. On the back there is a bronze tablet with a list of names of pioneers who arrived in the Salt Lake Valley on July 24, 1847 . The pedestal is crowned by a nine-foot bronze statue of Brigham Young , with his right hand resting on a cane, and his left pointing in the distance [6] .
