Iris smelly ( Latin Íris foetidíssima ) is a monocotyledonous plant, a species of the genus Iris ( Iris ) of the family Iris ( Iridaceae ).

Description

Perennial herb with a thick rhizome up to 14 mm in diameter, reaching 25-40 (80) cm in height. Basal leaves are xiphoid, 25-35 mm wide, emitting an unpleasant odor when damaged. Peduncle angular, with 2–4 leaves similar to basal.

Flowers are collected in 2-3 (9) at the end of the peduncle, light blue, yellowish or whitish, often with a greenish tint. Pestle column 4-5 times longer than ovary, yellow, stigma bifid. The wrapper consists of lanceolate leaves.

The fruit is an angular egg-shaped box . Seeds are spherical, large, bright orange.

The diploid set of chromosomes is 2n = 40 [3] .

Value

A highly decorative evergreen plant grown in gardens in Europe. The species Iris foetidissima itself and the variety with white-striped leaves 'Variegata' are assigned to plants awarded the Award of Garden Merit .

It prefers neutral or slightly acidic soils; it is able to grow well both under direct lighting, and in partial shade and in shaded places. Propagation by division of the rhizome or seed.

Poisonous plant unsuitable for eating by cattle.

Distribution and Ecology

Distributed in Western Europe and the Mediterranean ( UK , Ireland , Spain , Portugal , Italy ), as well as in North Africa .
