He enjoyed a very high reputation as an organist; only Joseph Vogler was respected above him. Knecht wrote the symphony Musical Pictures of Nature ( German: Tongemälde der Natur ), which, according to the program, is very similar to the Beethoven Pastoral Symphony ; Knecht developed the same story in the organ sonata “The Shepherd’s Bliss Interrupted by a Thunderclap” ( German: Die durch ein Donnerwetter unterbrochene Hirtenwonne ). He is also the author of other musical works, including psalms , masses , several operas and vaudeville , the musical drama “Song of the Bell” ( German by Das Lied von der Glocke , according to Schiller ), organ pieces, piano variations, sonatins , duets for flutes , arias , hymns , two collections of choirs , etc.

Knecht’s compositions were short-lived. Knecht is the author of a large number of theoretical works. As a theoretician, he took on the position of extreme schematism in music, considering musical material with the help of terraced chord constructions at all levels of the scale . In addition to theoretical work, Knecht also owns a textbook on organ playing.
