It was founded in 2009 in San Jose by a group of immigrants from Google , Facebook and Amazon , led by Dheraj Pandey [3] . In 2011, the company sold the first copy of the Virtual Computing Platform hardware-software complex. Since that time, the company has opened sales offices in Australia , Europe , the Asia-Pacific region , Japan , Latin America . The total investment in the company by 2014 over five rounds amounted to more than $ 310 million, while investments of $ 140 million received in the fifth round corresponded to a business estimate of about $ 2 billion [4] [1] . In 2016, the company made an initial public offering on the NASDAQ exchange , according to which the company's capitalization amounted to about $ 5 billion.
The main product is the Virtual Computing Platform software and hardware complex, built on modular principles from standard server nodes of the x86-64 architecture . The nodes operate under the control of one of the server hypervisors (supported by VMware ESX , Microsoft Hyper-V and its own Acropolis hypervisor based on KVM ) and are combined into a single pool using software called NOS ( Nutanix Operating System ), one of the components of which is a special virtual machine called CVM ( Controller VM ), which serves all the I / O operations of the hypervisor and other host virtual machines. When working in a cluster, NOS creates a software-defined storage environment NDFS ( Nutanix Distributed Filesystem ), which is available to hypervisors as NFS , iSCSI, or Server Message Block storage [5] .
In addition to the supply of pre-configured hardware and software systems, software is also distributed separately. Nutanix solutions belong to the class of “hyperconverged systems” (consisting exclusively of standard server nodes, in contrast to converged systems such as FlexPod and which became widespread in the late 2000s and early 2010s, the complexes of which also include specialized storage networks ), and the company in this market segment as of 2014 is noted as a leader ahead of players such as (absorbed by HPE in 2017), Scale Computing , VMWare , EMC , Pivot3 [6] . Products are distributed both through their own sales channels and through the main distributor - Lenovo .
