Biography
Ivan Fomichyov was born on January 20, 1919 in the village of Turkovo (now - Sosnovsky district of the Nizhny Novgorod region ). After finishing three classes of school, he worked on a collective farm . In 1939, Fomichev was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army . Since July 1944 - on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War. He was wounded three times in battles [1] .
By January 1945, Junior Sergeant Ivan Fomichev commanded a machine gun at the 1030th Infantry Regiment of the 260th Infantry Division of the 47th Army of the 1st Belorussian Front . He distinguished himself during the liberation of Poland . On January 16, 1945, Fomichev’s crew participated in battles on the bridgehead on the western bank of the Vistula. Moving forward with his machine gun, Fomichev fired at the enemy. When the machine gun failed, he continued to fight off grenades, forcing the German units to retreat [1] .
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated March 24, 1945 for “courage and courage shown in the Wisla Oder operation”, Junior Sergeant Ivan Fomichyov was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal number 5229 [1 ] .
In 1946, the rank of foreman Fomichev was demobilized. He lived and worked in his native village. He died on June 25, 1980, was buried in Turkovo [1] .
He was also awarded the Order of the Patriotic War of the 2nd degree and a number of medals [1] .
