Biography
Ward was born March 4, 1914 in Minneapolis , Minnesota . Since childhood, Ward was an unusual craving for railways , preserved for life.
After graduating from high school, Ward enrolled in the Santa Barbara School of Art in California , deciding to become a magazine illustrator, however, once he saw Walt Disney’s cartoon The Three Little Pigs at a morning show, he went to Hollywood with a briefcase in one hand.
Ward was taken to the studio in 1934 . Among the characters animated by Ward are the Jimini cricket from the cartoon Pinocchio , Tralyal and Trulyal from the cartoon Alice in Wonderland and the cat Lucifer from the cartoon Cinderella .
As a trombonist, Ward played in the jazz group Firehouse Five Plus Two together with his colleague Frank Thomas . Like his friend Olli Johnston , Ward loved trains. On his two acres of orange grove, he built a garden railroad , which, in part, sparked interest in trains at Walt Disney .
Ward retired in 1972 . In retirement, he advised on themed rides at an amusement park, such as World of Motion, for example.
Ward Kimball died on July 8, 2002 at the age of 88 from pneumonia [6] [7] [8] . In 2005, the new Disneyland railroad engine ( Engine No. 5 ) was named “Ward Kimball” - in honor of the animator.
