Baptismal thaler

Baptismal Thaler of 1723. Mint in the Harz

The baptismal thaler ( German Tauftaler ) is the name of a large silver thalero-like medal (see thaler ), intended as a gift to the godparents for christening [1] . It belongs to the category of “gift talers” (German Geschenktaler). The baptismal thaler is identified by the characteristic thematic content of the drawing. On the one hand, there is a scene from the Gospel story - the baptism of Jesus Christ in the Jordan River by John the Baptist. On the reverse side - the text from the Bible [2] [3] .

A baptismal thaler, as a rule, weighs as much as a regular thaler of that time, but has a larger diameter. The weight, as well as the wear marks on the baptismal thalers, which are characteristic of the weight and wear marks on most ordinary thalers, allow us to conclude that there are baptismal thalers in the free money circulation of their time. The period of this circulation corresponded to the period of circulation of ordinary thalers of the corresponding "weight category" (within 29-30 grams) (see Thaler in Germany and Austria ).
