The championship was also a qualifying tournament for the selection of participants in field hockey competitions at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona . Qualification went to the teams that took the first three places.
The winners of the championship were the German national team , who won in the finals the Netherlands national team with a score of 3: 1. The England team became the bronze medalist of the championship, having beaten the USSR team in the 3rd place match with a score of 2: 1 in the penalty shoot-out (the main time of the match ended with the score 1: 1).
