Story

The beginning of the 1970s, the time of the Cultural Revolution in China. After Chairman Mao urged schools to be set up in the fields, a group of urban schoolchildren came to the village for re-education. High school student Jing settles in the headman's house and becomes part of his large family. She writes a curriculum on the legend of the local "tree of heroes" - hawthorn, under the branches of which during the war the Japanese shot Chinese patriots and which since then has been giving bright red flowers. After arriving, she meets a guy named Sun, who works in a nearby geological party. They are imbued with mutual sympathy, however, in order to count on a teacher's place after school (Jing is necessary because her father is repressed, her mother is sick, and there are two younger children in the family), Jing must be careful and not compromise herself in anything. They decide to hide their feelings from others and can only afford to arrange secret meetings occasionally ...
