Book annals

“Book Chronicle” is a state bibliographic index (GBU) published by the Russian Book Chamber (based on a mandatory free copy ), which informs about book publications in all branches of knowledge and practical activity and carries out initial bibliographic registration of all new books published in the Russian Federation , as well as books published in foreign countries by order of Russian publishers.

The Book Chronicle is the oldest of the national state bibliographic indexes. Its founder was the head of the Main Directorate for Press, Senator A. V. Belhard . The first issue was released on December 31, 1906 in St. Petersburg [1] . Before the October Revolution of 1917, the chronicle was published by the Main Directorate of Press mainly for censorship purposes: weekly, along with data on new books, lists of books withdrawn from sale, lists of decrees on the destruction of publications, etc. were published from 1907 to 1916 “Book Chronicle ”announced the release of 266,000 books in 85 languages ​​and dialects with a circulation of more than one billion copies worth more than 300,000,000 rubles. The publication was weekly and was published every Saturday. The first editor of the Book Chronicle was bibliophile Andrei Dmitrievich Toropov , who founded the first Russian Bibliographic Society. The first employees of the magazine, along with the staff of the Main Directorate for Press, were famous scientists and book figures: A. I. Heydukevich, K. Yu. Geruts, ND Griboedov, V. Ya. Krinitsky, M. I. Lappo, V. V. Lebedev, M. I. Makarevsky, S. V. Nedachin , V. P. Preobrazhensky, I. V. Tsvetkov , Z. Sh. Shamil [1] .

After the revolution, the main task of the publication was to timely inform readers of newly published literature. Since 1920, the chronicle is published in Moscow.

Currently, the publication is published weekly and informs about books and brochures of all types and types: official-documentary, scientific, popular-scientific, mass-political, vocational, educational, reference, informational, religious, literary and artistic, children's publications and youth and leisure. It also describes a large number of preprints and information on individual issues of serial publications with thematic titles, as well as all numbered book series.

A bibliographic record of a publication includes:

  • serial number of the record;
  • bibliographic description;
  • the state registration number under which the publication is registered in the Russian Book Chamber;
  • UDC indexes.

Each number of the annals contains a name index, an index of languages ​​(except Russian), in which books are printed, a numbering index of bibliographic records of books and brochures for which cards and an index of erroneous ISBNs are not published. Once a quarter an additional edition of the chronicle is published containing a nominal, subject, geographical index and an index of erroneous ISBNs. Annually, a separate edition is published in the Book Chronicle. Series Index. ”

The chronicle is available in print and electronic versions.
