AppearanceMedium-sized parrots with a body length of 25 to 35 cm. Their characteristic feature is a wide step-shaped tail, in which there are 4 central feathers of the same size, and the size of the remaining feathers varies in decreasing order on both sides of the central ones. On the beak, near its end, there is a notch, and on the cheeks there is a large yellow, white or blue spot.
DistributionThey live mainly in Australia and only a few species - on the island of Tasmania and a number of other smaller nearby islands.
LifestyleInhabit the gardens, sparse forests , light tall tropical groves . They feed on seeds of wild herbs and cultivated plants, as well as insects and various fruits. Well adapted to movement on the ground, deftly run and maneuver among grassy vegetation. They fly reluctantly, usually a short distance.
ReproductionThe female lays from 4 to 6 eggs , maybe more (up to 8). Hatching lasts 20-22 days. Chicks hatch, covered in thick down, blind. In the early days, they are mainly fed by the female, in the future both partners. At the age of 28-35 days, chicks leave the nest, but their parents take care of them for another 2-3 weeks. Nest usually twice a year.
