Biography

Maria is the daughter of Prince George Victor Waldeck of Pyrmont and Princess Helena Nassauska , sister of Queen Emma of the Netherlands and the last reigning prince Frederick Waldeck of Pyrmont . February 15, 1877 in Arolsen, Maria married Prince William. In this marriage was born the daughter of Paulina (1877-1965), who in 1898 married Prince Friedrich Hermann Vidsky (1872-1945).

Maria’s second pregnancy ended tragically: the son of Ulrich, born in 1880, died a few months later. The death of the infant, the only son of King William II, had political consequences for the Protestant kingdom, in which the Catholic line of the Württemberg house would inherit if the November revolution of 1918 had not led to the elimination of the monarchy. The negative attitude of many indigenous Protestant Württemberg towards the future Catholic ruler led to rumors that Ulrich allegedly fell victim to a Catholic conspiracy to kill him. There is no evidence of this, but these rumors were a good example of the deep prejudice against each other that existed between the two religious groups in Württemberg for many more years.

Princess Mary died in unsuccessful births in April 1882 and was buried in the Old Cemetery in Ludwigsburg.
