Biography

Ilya Utkin was born in 1922 in the village of Dubrovnoye (now - Yarkovsky district of the Tyumen region ). After graduating from a rural school, he worked first on a collective farm, then at a factory. In 1942 Utkin was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army and sent to the front of World War II [1] .

By September 1943, Senior Sergeant Ilya Utkin commanded the reconnaissance platoon of the 957th Infantry Regiment of the 309th Infantry Division of the 40th Army of the Voronezh Front . He distinguished himself during the battle of the Dnieper . On the night of September 23-24, 1943, an advance detachment under the command of Utkin crossed the Dnieper in the vicinity of the village of Balyko-Schuchinka, Kagarlyksky District, Kiev Region, Ukrainian SSR, and captured an important “language”. While returning, Utkin's group defeated the enemy ambush [1] .

By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of October 23, 1943 for "courage and bravery shown during the crossing of the Dnieper," senior sergeant Ilya Utkin was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal number 2743 [1] .

On November 4, 1943 Utkin was seriously injured during the fighting for Kiev and was sent to the evacuation hospital in the Vologda region . Died of his wounds on May 28, 1944, was buried in the village of Maurino, Vologda region, Vologda region [1] .

He was also awarded the Order of the Red Banner and a number of medals [1] .

In honor of Utkin, the school in his homeland is named [1] .
