Biography
Born in the family of a craftsman. After studying at school, he worked as a school teacher.
In 1947 he joined the Tunisian Communist Party (TKP) . He took an active part in demonstrations and other actions of the communists of Tunisia.
At the 4th Congress of the TKP in May 1951 he was elected a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party. Arrested in February 1952 during a protest against the deportation of nationalists and communist leaders. Imprisoned in camp Téboursouk. After his release in 1954, he was again arrested.
At the 5th Congress of the TCH held in May 1956, he was elected a member of the Politburo and the Secretariat. In 1957, he won first place in the voting list for the election of the city council of Tunisia.
After banning the activities of the Communist Party of Tunisia in January 1963, he was arrested along with several party leaders, was released a few months later and went abroad for health reasons.
After eight years of exile, he returned to his homeland in 1971.
He was elected Secretary General of the Communist Party of Tunisia at the 8th Congress of the TKP, which took place illegally in February 1981. He was re-elected to the same position at the 9th Congress, held in Tunisia in June 1987. He headed the TCH until 1993.
After the party conference in April 1993, he continued to play a key and leading role in the communist movement of the country even after the transformation of the TKP into the current Mouvement Ettajidid Movement .
At the second congress of the Movement ("Congress of Reconstruction"), held in July 2007, Ahmed Brahim was elected the first secretary of the Movement, and Mohammed Harmel became the honorary chairman of the Movement .
Within two terms, he was elected a member of the National Assembly of Tunisia (1994-2004). In 2008, he was appointed a member of the House of Councilors.
