Körber ( German Körber ) is an ancient German spiritual and aristocratic family, one of the branches of which, having divided into two, has been developed in Russia and Austria since the beginning of the 18th century. Until the middle of the XIX century, the Russian branch of the genus did not leave the borders of Livonia and developed mainly in the spiritual direction. She gave several generations of evangelical Lutheran shepherds. Subsequently, the branch lost its spiritual orientation and spread beyond the Baltic states. Having suffered significantly during the years of the Revolution and the Civil War, being partially scattered throughout other countries, the branch survived in Russia, where a large number of its representatives continue to live. In the Baltic States, the Kerbers had genealogical ties with such German-Baltic clans as: Reichenbach, Riesemann, Brinck, v. Steven, Hoeppener, Kotter, Witte, Vick, Eckert, Koschlitz, Hagen, v. Schillz, Baetge, Röthgen, Lelleken, Schöler, Orlowaky, Hofer, v. Freymann, v. Mlnckwitz, Puhk, Fortmann, Karutz, Hehn, Gadebusch.

Ancestor
According to a study carried out in the first half of the 19th century by pastor Edward Philippe Körber and confirmed 100 years later by his great-grandson Oscar Karl Körber , the ancestor of the German-Baltic and Austrian kind of Körber is the Teutonic Knight Udo v. Korb, who owned at the beginning of the XV century castle in Swabia . There is almost no information about him, it is only known that in 1410 he participated in the Battle of Grunwald at Tannenberg. On that day, July 15, the Teutonic Order first suffered a crushing defeat. Of the two hundred and fifty true knights of the Order (knights of the "white cloak"), 203 were killed, including the great master Ulrich von Jungingen . Von Korb was more fortunate. He was among those forty-seven knights who managed to stay in the saddle. It was after this battle that he was granted a castle in the Alps. It is not known which of the two castles near the village of Waldkirch and how long he owned. Both of them (Castelburg and Schwarzenburg ) were captured by the Protestants during the Thirty Years War (1618–1648) , but were completely destroyed on March 14, 1634.
Etymology
The first records of the genus were discovered in ancient Bavarian chronicles dating back to the turn of the 11th and 12th centuries. According to the records, it has Teutonic roots. Even then, von Korba had significant land and property holdings. In alliance with other influential surnames, representatives of the clan often participated in campaigns of conquest. There are two explanations for the origin of the surname Korb. First, she could reflect the occupation of her ancestor. Translated from German, “Korb” means “basket”, and carriers of the surname probably once traded in the production or sale of baskets. In the second version, the surname could appear among immigrants from the German settlement “Korb”. The names Korber, Körberus, Körber, Kerber (Korber, Körberus, Körber, Kerber), which can be translated as “basketry”, are derived from the surname Korb.
It was possible to establish that in 1300 a certain Ulrich Korber lived in Basel , and Conrad Korber was known in Willingen in 1311. Somewhat later, in 1345, in Augsburg, another Corber named Heinrich became famous for something. But these were all branches, which, if they had, were very indirectly related to Udo von Korb, since they existed even before his birth.
According to the Encyclopedia Allgemeines Schriftsteller und GelehrtenLexikon der Provinzen Livland, Estland und Kurland, published in 1829 in Mitau , the Baltic branch of the Körber was separated from the Korb family in one of the next generations after Udo. The first of the descendants of Udo von Korb is known for his great-grandson Otto Korber. It was in his notes that Edward Philip Kerber discovered information about his great-grandfather.
During the First World War, several representatives of the Russian branch of the Kerber family, under the pressure of political circumstances, changed the name of Kerber to a more “Russian” in terms of its sound. Moreover, they actually translated the word “basket” (“Korb”) from German into Estonian (“Korv”), and the surname began to sound like Corvin.

Germanic Generations
Otto Korber (Otto [Otho, Ottho] Korber) (1490, Bamberg - 1553, Kulmbach). German theologian and preacher of the Reformation period, one of the closest associates of Martin Luther . The names of his two sons are known:
- ☆ Elias Korber is a rural pastor from Weihenzell near Nuremberg. He is known only for publishing his father’s books.
- ☆ Johann Martin Korber is a Protestant pastor. At baptism, Martin Luther himself was his successor. The name of Johann Martin’s grandson has been preserved:
- ◄ Jacob v. Körber (01.01.1608, Saxony - 04.10.1667, Lower Auerbach , Vogtland ). He was known as a "big tenant and a successful trader." In the annals of 1641, his name is mentioned along with the names of two other major industrialists of this city. Kerber owned a large estate and an enterprise engaged in brass work. He was married twice. His first wife was the daughter of a member of the Lower Auerbach Municipal Council, Eva von Heinsberg (1609 - 03/10/16659, Lower Auerbach). Four years before his death, Kerber married Anna Barbara von der Planitz (01.03.1609 - 1686). He did not have offspring in his second marriage. Kerber died in his 60th year of life and was buried next to his first wife, whom he had five children. The names of his four sons are known:
- ★ Jacob Andreas Körber (1643-1668);
- ★ Christian Körber (1644-1709);
- ★ Hans Christoph Körber (Hans Christoph Körber) (1647-1669);
- ★ Friedrich Körber (1638, Nuremberg - 04/02/1684, Lengelfeld , Vogtland). At the age of 12 he was assigned to a school at the St. Thomas Monastery in Leipzig. Young people were accepted here only from the age of 17, so Friedrich was enrolled in the school with a special exception, as a descendant of the famous Otto Corber. Due to infancy, studies at the monastery were delayed. Then there was a university in Nuremberg, from which, in 1665, Kerber received the title of Master of Philosophy and Theology. In 1669, Kerber was ordained a pastor and appointed to the parish of Turme (Glauchau) in Saxony. Three years later, in December 1672, at the request of the faithful, he was transferred by the pastor to Lengelfeld (Vogtland). Here he remained until his death. The pastor died at the age of 48. In his memorial sermon, the church caretaker from Plauen, Johann Heifels, noted that Friedrich Kerber was distinguished by a special "conscientiousness, devotion to the flock and high decency . " Back in Glauchau in 1669, Kerber married Regina Barbara Adler (10/04/1640, Schöneck , Vogtland - 04/22/1711, Krölpa ), whose father was pastor Zacharius Adler ( 06/16/1600 , Elbogen - 06/25/1658 , Schöneck) and his mother - Barbara (nee Von Handel) is the sister of an influential industrialist from Lower Auerbach. There were five children in the pastor’s family, but only one of them was preserved:
- ✿ Adam Friedrich Körber (07/31/1644, Troyen , Saxony - 04/22/1742, Krölpa, Thuringia)
- At the age of nine, in 1683, Adam Friedrich was sent to school at the University of Leipzig [1] . Then he studied at the theological faculty of the University of Leipzig and completed his education at the University of Jena . At the age of nineteen, much earlier than usual, Körber was awarded a master's degree in theology.
- Before becoming a pastor, he served for some time as a home teacher in the castle of Count Johann Albrecht von Ronov-Bieberstein in Oppurg (Thuringia) and was only ordained pastor on 03.21.1701. First, Kerber led the parish of the church in Upper Oppurg and its two rural branches in Solkwitz and Hertevica, then, on 09.09.1707, he was transferred by the rector of the church in Kölpa. Like in Upper Oppurg, here are under the jurisdiction of Kerber and two branches - in Birkigt and Lausnitsa. It was in Krölpa by the efforts of Pastor Körber that the commune, which exists today, was organized. Kerber’s innovative ideas seemed wrong to many, which often led to conflicts, but time put everything in its place.
- Back in 1700, Kerber married Countess Maria Elizabeth von Staufenbul (? - 12/11/1714, Krölpa), who, having given birth to five sons, left the pastor a widower. For 12 years he alone raised and raised children, and only in 1726 he remarried with Anna Adelheida Tamarus, from whom he had another son. It is interesting that Kerber called all of his sons from his first marriage Johann. They differed only in their middle name:
- ☀ Johann Friedrich Körber (1701-1767)
- ☀ Johann Albrecht Körber (1703 -?)
- ☀ Johann August Körber (1709 -?)
- ☀ Johann Carl Körber (1710-1711)
- ☀ Johann Wilhelm Körber (1713 -?)
- ☀ Julius Körber (1729-1740)
- ☀ Johann Albrecht Körber (1703 -?)
- The letter of the aging pastor, addressed to him in 1733, to Livonia, to his eldest son Johann Friedrich, has been preserved. A few lines from it deserve special attention:
- At the age of nine, in 1683, Adam Friedrich was sent to school at the University of Leipzig [1] . Then he studied at the theological faculty of the University of Leipzig and completed his education at the University of Jena . At the age of nineteen, much earlier than usual, Körber was awarded a master's degree in theology.

“The highly esteemed, cordially beloved son! ... I want to say that from the moment you leave, I can’t relax, because the other sons do not leave me alone and all the time they put me in expenses. None of your brothers are well organized.
... William from the very beginning was a fraudster who caused only complaints and irritation, and his life has not changed for the better. Both for him and for me it would be better if he drowned even at the first bathing. He will not be my mercy and my blessing, because he does not want to change for the better. For six months now he hasn’t been shown to my eyes, and I don’t know where he is. ”
- The father never found out that his dissolute son Johann Wilhelm , mentioned by him in the letter, would be the founder of one of the famous aristocratic dynasties of Körber ( Austrian branch of the clan ). Just in 1733 he went to seek happiness in Austria. The ancestor of another dynasty, only in Livonia will be the eldest son - Johann Friedrich - the one to whom the letter was addressed ( Livonian branch of the clan ).

Aristocratic line
☀ Peter Friedrich von Körber [2] (03.3.1732, Tarvastu - 17.10.1799, Revel)
After graduation, he went to Germany to study as a doctor. Educated at the universities of Halle , Erfurt and Jena. May 3, 1756, Kerber defended his thesis and, having received a doctorate in medicine, returned to Livonia. For ten years he worked at a children's shelter in Reval, and then - as a state doctor in the districts of Harjumaa and Derpt. In 1777, 1782 and 1783 he distinguished himself during the fight against epidemics of smallpox , and in 1783, Kerber, together with Dr. Shulinus, was engaged in mass vaccinations of peasants of Livonia against smallpox. This happened 13 years earlier than the officially recorded date for the start of the dispute, carried out by the Englishman Jenner . Kerber is the author of several treatises on medicine, a member of the Stockholm Academy of Sciences.
Kerber won great authority not only as a doctor, but also as a public figure. In 1784, in his article “Lieber die jährliche Hungersnot der lief- und estländischen Bauern”, discussing the plight of the peasants, Kerber convincingly showed with concrete examples that the landowner’s direct interest was the prosperity of his serfs. A rank for the development of trade, he argued that general economic mechanisms should work for the lord and his peasants. At the same time, Kerber came up with a plan for the reform of professional guilds, widespread in the Baltic states.
