Biography

Born March 25, 1908 in the village of Zlatopol, now within the city of Novomirgorod of the Kirovograd region, in a working class family. Russian. Member of the CPSU since 1932. He graduated from 3 courses of the Leningrad Agricultural Institute.

In the Red Army since 1930, in 1932 he graduated from the Kiev Artillery School, in 1938 - the Poltava Military-Political School. A participant in the battles on the Khalkhin Gol River and the Soviet-Finnish War .

Since June 1941 on the fronts of World War II. He distinguished himself in the battle for the city of Ciechin ( Germany ) on April 15, 1945, when, being on a firing position, led the reflection of 4 enemy counterattacks.

On April 23–25, 1945, in street battles in Berlin, he himself put forward direct fire guns, was wounded, but remained in service.

By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated May 31, 1945, the Guard, Lieutenant Colonel Shapovalov Afanasy Afanasevich was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union with the awarding of the Order of Lenin and the Golden Star medal.

In 1946 he graduated from the highest officer artillery school and was transferred to the reserve. He lived and worked in Kharkov, died there on September 27, 1978, and was buried in the Walk of Fame city cemetery.

He was awarded the Order of Lenin, two orders of the Red Banner, two orders of the Patriotic War 2 degrees, the Order of the Red Star, medals ^[1] .

A memorial plaque was installed on the facade of school No. 1 of Novomirgorod Hero.
