Biography

Born on January 18, 1923 in the village of Kolodievka, Chervonoarmeysky district, Zhytomyr region, in a family of an employee. Ukrainian. After completing 7 classes and special courses, he worked as an accountant in the district consumer union.

In the Red Army and at the front in World War II from October 1943. As part of the 26th Guards Cavalry Regiment of the 7th Guards Cavalry Division of the 1st Guards Cavalry Corps participated in the Kiev defensive , Zhytomyr-Berdychiv , Rivne-Lutsk and Proskurovsk-Chernivtsi operations.

On March 9, 1944, a reconnaissance platoon of a horse reconnaissance guard, Red Army soldier Latko, as part of a group, while carrying out a combat mission on the western bank of the Styr River near the village of Mstyshin, captured a German corporal and delivered him to the regiment headquarters. When the group returned from the mission, fighting off the pursuit, it destroyed four enemy soldiers. For the entire period of battles on the western bank of the river, he killed seven enemy soldiers with machine gun and grenade fires, and also captured three opponents.

By order of the commander of the 7th Guards Cavalry Division of March 28, 1944, for the courage shown in battles with the enemy, the Guards Red Army Latko was awarded the Order of Glory of the 3rd degree.

On June 19, 1944, the Red Army guard Latko in battle for the city of Kamenka-Bug, while in combat units, while repelling an enemy attack from a machine gun, exterminated six enemy soldiers and officers, put down a machine gun with grenades.

By order of the troops of the 1st Ukrainian Front of September 20, 1944, the Guard, Red Army Latko was awarded the Order of Glory of the 2nd degree.

Subsequently, he participated in the Carpathian-Duklinsky , Sandomierz-Silesian , Lower Silesian and Berlin operations.

On April 20-29, 1945, participating in repelling the enemy’s repeated counterattacks at the Leippen settlement, he defeated over ten from a machine gun and captured four soldiers and one officer.

By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of June 27, 1945, for the courage, bravery and heroism shown in the struggle against the invaders, the Red Army guard Latko Vasily Petrovich was awarded the Order of Glory of the 1st degree.

The war ended in Czechoslovakia . In 1947, demobilized. He lived at home, in the village of Kolodievka. He worked as an accountant at the Chervonoarmeysky district consumer union.

He was awarded the orders of the Patriotic War of the 1st degree, Glory of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd degree, medals.

He died on July 23, 1972.
