Creativity

In the 1968-78s, Belasha created a series of 19 murals depicting the “ Romanian spirit ”, the history and culture of the Romanians, adorning the walls of the foyer of Iasi University , which received the poetic name “ Hall of lost (silent, muffled) steps ”. [1] These works brought the artist fame both outside Romania and among the rich and influential people in his homeland.

In 1973 for a substantial fee commissioned by the mayor of Bucharest, Belas painted a family portrait of the President of the CPR Nicolae Ceausescu and his wife Elena Ceausescu . Later, the artist was reminded of his painting, and he was accused of glorifying the personality cult of Ceausescu as a court painter. As a result, Belasha was forgotten in his homeland in the 1990s.

At the same time, the relationship between the artist and the authorities was not idealistic. His uncle and father at different times were persecuted for political reasons.

At the same time, there were ideological contradictions between the artist and the authorities. Belashi's work was contrary to the then prevailing socialist realism . He never painted pictures on the subject and style close to socialist realism, did not depict workers and peasants, the life of ordinary people.

Distinctive features of his work was the image, along with people of half-humans, half-beasts and mythical animals endowed with human features. In most of his paintings, the color scheme consists of a shade of blue and blue. The artist himself attributed his work to cosmic romanticism.

The last two decades of his life led a bohemian lifestyle, receiving income not only from the sale of paintings, but also from private painting lessons to wealthy and famous people in Romania, among his students were the Moldavian singer Anna Lesko and several lovers of the Romanian oligarchs .

Belasha died in a hospital in Bucharest from lung cancer, buried in Iasi.
