Biography

Born in the family of a petty official. He studied at a clerical school in Warsaw. In 1797 he received the place of a home teacher from the son of a skrebnitsky archbishop. He completed his secondary education at a teacher training school in Sukhlikhuv an der Oder, where, before graduating, he already taught Polish in junior courses.

In 1802-1803 he was sent to the University of Halle for a scholarship from the Prussian government for study and was appointed lecturer in Polish language and literature there. In 1803 he returned to Warsaw, where he was appointed professor of ancient languages ​​and German at the Warsaw Lyceum. Since September 1807, he taught Polish language and literature there. September 15, 1809 was appointed professor of Polish and universal literature and headed the department of Polish language, stylistics and literature. From 1809 he taught Polish history and optionally universal history, and in 1810 he headed the department of history and geography. In 1811, the Society of Elementary Books instructed him to prepare a textbook of literature for the 6th grade of provincial schools. In 1811-1817 he held the position of head of the school library. At the same time, he served as a teacher in the house of Tomasz Ostrovsky.

In 1812 he married Emilia Zeydler. His daughter Clementine married Casimir Stronzinsky , the eldest son Alfred became a famous doctor, and the youngest Vladislav became a journalist.

In 1816, Felix Bentkowski, awarded the Honoris Causa degree from the Jagiellonian University [1] , received a Ph.D. (for work on the history of Polish literature). Then he became a corresponding member of the Krakow Scientific Society and headed the Plock Scientific Society. From October 7, 1817 to 1832 he was a professor of general history at the Tsarist University of Warsaw, from 1821 he became the dean of the Faculty of Sciences and Arts three times. At the university, he founded a numismatic cabinet, becoming also its director. Since 1823, he was a private teacher of the son of Grand Duke Constantine. In 1825, Bentokwsky designed a monument to the Union of Lublin in Lublin. After retiring in 1833, he served as an honorary judge and from 1838 until his death he headed the Central Archive of the Kingdom of Poland.

In 1819, he became a holder of the Order of St. Stanislav IV degree.

The main work of Bentkowski is “Historja literatury polskiej w spisie dziel drukowanych wystawiona” (Warsaw, 1814), a bibliographic list of all then known Polish print publications and other literary monuments, which served as the basis for Polish bibliography and a very important tool for later scholars of this subject. Bentkovsky’s book, in the opinion of 19th-century historians, constituted an era in the history of Polish literature, because thanks to interest in it in the Kingdom of Poland, great work began on the search, description and reprinting of old Polish books.

In addition, from 1815 to 1821, Bentkowski published the journal Pamiętnik Warszawski, wrote articles in the German Allgemeine Litteratur-Zeitung, published in Halle, and placed his research in university programs and in the Rocznikach of the Warsaw Society of Science Lovers; finally, his articles were also published in the journal Biblioteka Warszawska .
