Biography

He was the second son in the family of Felix Bentkovsky . He graduated from the Warsaw Lyceum . At the time of the uprising of the Polish Uprising of 1830, he was thirteen years old, therefore, despite his ardent desire, he was not enlisted in the soldiers (the rebels accepted into their ranks only starting from the age of 15), however, he fled from the house and still took part the battle of Grokhov and in the defense of the Volus redoubt from the troops under the command of General Paskevich .

After the defeat of the uprising, he graduated from high school and entered the University of Koenigsberg to study law , but he soon left his studies for health reasons and returned to Warsaw in 1840, where he received the position of a prosecutor , which, however, did not suit him. In the same 1840, he went to Italy to treat his lungs ; upon his return in 1842, he managed for some time his father’s farm in Gruec , which also did not appeal to him. In 1843 he moved to the Grand Duchy of Poznan , where he enlisted in the 5th Prussian Army artillery brigade stationed in Poznan and was then enrolled in the engineering and artillery school in Berlin . In 1845 he received the rank of second lieutenant , and in 1847, after completion of training, he was promoted to lieutenant and sent to serve in the Swiss garrison.

In 1848, he retired, received with great difficulty after his declaration of unwillingness to serve in the Prussian army, which brutally suppressed anti-Prussian demonstrations among the Poles that same year. He returned to Poznan and for a short time worked there as an editor of the Polish-language newspaper Gazeta Polska . In May 1849 he went to Hungary , where he took an active part in the anti-Austrian uprising and fought in the rank of captain in the battle of Timisoara . After the defeat of the Hungarian uprising, he returned to Poznan through Constantinople and Marseille , where he again worked as a journalist in various magazines and was also one of the editors of the Orgelbrand Encyclopedia .

In 1852, he began his political career as a member of the Prussian parliament in Berlin, retaining this place for 11 years and actively defending the interests of the Poles in it.

After the beginning of the January uprising of 1863 in the Kingdom of Poland, Bentkovsky refused the deputy mandate, left Poznan and joined the uprising, in the strength of which he took the post of chief of staff Marian Langevich . After the defeat of the forces of Langevich, he took refuge in Krakow . He returned to Poznan in 1865, but was arrested and sentenced to one year in custody in the fortress of Magdeburg . After serving his sentence, he again settled in Poznan, where he worked as a cashier at Tellus Bank.

In 1868, after the death of Hippolytus Tsegelsky, he was appointed manager of his property and legal guardian of his children; doing business with great success, increasing the productivity of factories and assets of Tsegelsky. At the same time he participated in the work of the Poznan Society of Friends of Sciences .

He never had a family and died in Poznan, where he was buried.

Bentkowski was one of the founders of the famous newspaper Dziennik Poznański . For the Latin treatise Vicissitudines comitiorum in Polonia stirpe jagellonica regnante explicentur (written in 1839, while studying at the university), he received a double medal from the Leipzig society Yablonovsky, who published Bentkovsky’s study in volume VIII of his time-based publication. In addition, Bentkovsky translated the “History of England” by Macaulay , in 1859 published the essay “Sprawa polszczyzny w ogloszeniach urzędowych wielkiego księstwa Poznańskiego, pod sąd filologów oddana” and wrote articles on the military art of the Encyclopaedic of Pol.
