Character List
Main characters
- Mowgli
- Sayu: Urara Takano
- The protagonist of the story. Once upon a time, his parents, moving through the forest of Sioni, fell off a cliff and died, after Bagheera inadvertently frightened them. Survives only their newborn child, which in a flock takes a wolf named Alexander. At the beginning of the story Mowgli is 6 years old, by the end he is already 10 years old. Adventurous, cheerful and sociable boy. Suffers a personality crisis, trying to figure out who he really is and where he should live. He is never without his faithful boomerang fighting, which he made of wood.
- Bagheera
- Sayyu: Hiroya Ishimaru
- Black leopard, raised Mowgli since childhood and taught him the Laws of the Jungle. It is a de facto member of the wolf pack of Mowgli. He spent part of his childhood in the family of English colonialists, from where he later escaped. At the end of the story, Bagheera decides to leave the jungle and live among people with Mowgli.
- Baloo
- Sayu: Banjo Ginga
- Navy blue bear, friend Mowgli and his mentor. Despite this, he is also a brave and selfless warrior, fighting to protect Mowgli.
- Kaa
- Sayyu: Keaton Yamada
- Very wise, but quick-tempered stone python and one of Mowgli's friends. It is brown with golden spots. He also serves as a Mowgli teacher on several occasions, teaching him about animals that run from drought, and showing him how to defeat invading red wolves, luring them through bee cliffs.
- Alexander
- Sayyu: Masaru Ikeda
- Spouse Lurie, father Acre and Sura, as well as adoptive father for Mowgli. Becomes the new leader of the wolf pack after the aged Akela leaves his post. Dies during a forest fire from the clutches of Sher Khan, defending his flock.
- Luri
- Sayyu: Mari Yoko
- Wife of Alexander, mother of Acre and Sura, as well as a foster mother for Mowgli. Later widow. After the death of Alexander becomes the actual leader of the pack.
- Acru and Sura
- Sayyu: Yoko Matsuoka , Shigeru Nakahara
- The sons of Luri and Alexander, and the adoptive brothers for Mowgli. Were wolf cubs when Mowgli was accepted into the pack. Acru is very energetic and inclined to act before thinking, Sura is more restrained.
- Akela
- Sayyu: Yuzuru Fujimoto
- He was the leader of the pack when Mowgli was taken there. Very wise and decisive, because of his extreme old age, he decides to transfer his place to the leader Alexander, and later acts as an adviser for Luri. Towards the end of the story, Akela dies from wounds inflicted by jackals.
- Vermillion
- Alexander's best friend. After the resignation of Akela was a candidate for the place of leader, but lost in a fight with Alexander, and after that got a scar on his left eye. Later leaves the forest and becomes the leader of another wolf pack in the rocky desert.
- Bacchus
- A fat wolf that can never hunt normally. He is more fit to babysit wolf cubs. It appears most often in the first half of the series, and is sometimes used for comic contrast. He is mentioned later, however, when everyone was discussing the topic of a new leader (one of the wolves said that Bacchus should lead the pack, much to the disappointment of some other wolves), although after that he is no longer mentioned.
- Fargas
- The old wolf, who was saved by Alexander from a pack of wild dogs. He steals food from the storehouse of the pack in the first few of his appearances due to the fact that he was apparently brainwashed by demons; he soon goes on a journey after cleansing by Bagira, and since then has not returned.
- Lala
- The daughter of Vermillion and granddaughter Akela. She has orange fur, although a little lighter than her father. She acts like a tomboy at the beginning of the series and refuses to accept Mowgli as a member of the pack. Later in the series, she grows up and begins to love Mowgli more, even falling in love with him (episode "Mowgli fell in love"). Soon she switches to Sura when he rescues her from the trinity of crocodiles. By the end of the series, she and Sura are the parents of two cubs, one of whom was named Grow.
- Sander
- Young wolf from the flock of Vermillion. It is dark blue. Sander hates people after they killed his sister, Dulia, and resents Mowgli as a man. Eventually he reconciles with him, and although he leaves with Vermillion and his flock, he and Mowgli seem to share a close partnership. Sander seems, lieutenant, or beta wolf for Vermillion. Some translations depict him as a woman.
- Poppies
- Wolf and girlfriend Acru. Maki is a great singer, and at some point she saw that she gave singing lessons to Acre. She is a minor character and appears very late in the series. In the German version, she was actually a man, due to the fact that Acru was a woman in this version of the show. She still has her feminine appearance.
- Kichi
- Red panda, friend Mowgli. His parents are killed by humans. After Mowgli accuses Kichi of causing trouble (which he inadvertently does) and is a nuisance, it is harder for him to fit into a new crowd because he is already an outsider and decides to stand on the wrong foot. But his friendship with Mowgli is being tested when they are offered to work together. Later in the series, he lives with Mowgli in his hut.
- Rikki-Tikki-Tavi
- Based on a character from the jungle book of the same name, Rikki-Tikki is an Indian mongoose and pet of Mishua and her family. He shows the same protection in relation to her and her family, as well as to the English family in the original story, and extends this protective behavior to Mowgli. Rikki-Tikki kills the Baldeo homemade Indian cobra after she tries to attack Mowgli in the middle of the night, and then warns Mowgli that Mishua and her family are hiding from the villagers.
- Hathi
- A large Indian elephant that serves as the ruler of the entire forest of Sioni. Usually he is accompanied by two sons. Hathi first appeared in the series, proclaiming a water truce on the rock of the world during a drought and told the story of how fear came to animals. Hathi appears from time to time after that, appearing once to help drive out the Grizzlies, another time to help level the village, again to show Mowgli the elephant dance, and for the last time in the series finale when the animals say goodbye to Mowgli.
- Chil
- The Brahmin kite, who served as the envoy of the pack of Akela and Hathi.
- Bodhi
- Grandpa Mishua and Marie's father, whom Mowgli meets before meeting with her granddaughter, daughter and son-in-law. He meets Mowgli when he stumbles upon a trap-pit into which Mowgli fell. Mowgli is not sure if he can trust him first because of all the stories and reputations about people and their stories with animals, but he comes to accept Boji's offer to help when he heals him and gives him food. He turns out to be a really kind heart. Later, Boji was cut in the back by Sher Khan, defending Mowgli and Mishua from the tiger, but eventually recovered and survived.
- Marie
- Mother Mishua, daughter of Bodji and husband of Nil. When the family first meets Mowgli, Marie takes Mowgli for her son named Nato, but despite the fact that he is not, she still treats him as if he were one of her own, and he grows up her instantly. She loved Mowgli so much that she desperately wants and prefers him not to take on Sher Khan.
- Nile
- Mishua's father, Marie's husband, and Bodji's son-in-law. Like other family members, he eats Mowgli immediately. When a family is abducted and held captive, Mowgli rescues them and helps them escape, one of the ways in which, saving them from other villagers, and he has his animal friends send them to another city when animals destroy the residents' homes. Later in the middle of their trip, the Nile succumbs to pneumonia.
- Mishua
- The girl that Mowgli likes at the end of the series. Her grandfather originally found Mowgli when the boy was one of his wolf pack, saying that the boy reminded him of his grandson. Although Mowgli prefers to stay in the jungle at this time, he meets with his human friend later, along with Mishua. Later, her family took Mowgli.
Villains
- Sher Khan
- Sayyu: Sigezzo Sasaoka
- Bengal tiger and the main villain of the series. Cruel and cunning, rebellious and sinister. Often violates the foundations of the inhabitants of the forest of Zioni. He is also fearless in most things, except that he is a pyrophobe (or one who is afraid of fire), he is afraid of firearms, and he leaves when it comes to Hatha. His hatred of people is part of a story that goes back to meeting his first ancestor with one of them. In 34 episodes, Mowgli left a non-healing scar on Sher Khan’s face. In the final standoff, Mowgli beats and kills Sher Khan, plunging a knife straight into the heart.
- Tobacco
- Sher Khan's assistant. Unlike other versions of the Jungle Book, he is a confusing striped hyena (but still called a jackal, as he was in the original story), who never seems to understand anything. He is also known for his idleness, greed, incompetence, cunning, stupidity, meanness and chatter. Later, he and another hyena meet their defeat when Mowgli and Sher Khan again go against each other, and both hyenas are gored with buffaloes. It is not known whether they died from the beatings or simply fainted and then fled the scene.
