Araks Hydroelectric Station

Araks Hydroelectric Power Station (Araks waterworks) is a hydroelectric power station in Azerbaijan and Iran , located on the border river Araks . It was built in accordance with an interstate agreement with the goal of regulating the river flow, accumulating water for irrigation in the reservoir, and generating electricity. The first hydropower unit was launched in 1970.

The capacity of the hydroelectric station is 44 MW, the average annual electricity generation is 148 million kWh. The power and output of the station are divided on an equal footing between the two countries.

The structure of hydroelectric power plants includes:

  • earthen dam 900 m long and a maximum height of 40 m;
  • a spillway concrete dam having 4 spillway spans of 7 m wide, designed to pass 2900 m³ / s of water;
  • two hydroelectric buildings, on the Azerbaijani and Iranian banks, respectively. Four hydroelectric units with a capacity of 11 MW each with rotary vane turbines are located in the HPP buildings.
