History
Separate half- units could be in small or special detachments , for example, the Guards detachment of the honorary convoy of His Majesty ( 1877-1878 ), formed on May 11, 1877 to protect the Main Apartment during the stay of Alexander II in the army during the Russian-Turkish War of 1877-1878 years consisted of two companies of infantry, a half squadron of cavalry, half a company of sappers and foot artillerymen from the guard and under the command of the emperor army units. The detachment wing adjutants P. S. Ozerov, K. A. Runov, P. P. von Enden commanded the detachment . The detachment was disbanded on November 29, 1878. In addition to the sapper half, artillery could also exist.
In peacetime, in the army of the Russian Empire, a lieutenant could command half a squad, and platoons̀ (which were commissioned by non-commissioned officers throughout the state) [3] were supervised by second lieutenants and ensigns. However, it was allowed (for example, in wartime) that there were only four chief officers in the company — a commander, his deputy (senior officer with the rank of lieutenant) and two half-regiment commanders. In this case, non-commissioned officers commanded the platoons, and second lieutenants and / or ensigns took half-positions.
In the armies of other countries
In the US Army from 1779 to the end of the 19th century, half a company was called plutong , which in modern language corresponds to a platoon. [four]
In literature, the name half-company is sometimes applied in the same way to small tank units operating on secondary theaters of war before and at the very beginning of World War II . [5]
