Championships of Georgia have been held since 1928 . Outside of the competition, the famous Soviet chess players A. Ilyin-Geneva, V. Makogonov, V. Mikenas, P. Keres, L. Stein, E. Gufeld, R. Kholmov, E. Vasyukov, M. Tal and others took part in them.
The greatest successes in these competitions were achieved by B. Gurgenidze (won 11 championships), M. Shishov and 3. Sturua (5 each), A. Ebralidze (4), Sorokin, A. Blagidze, G. Zaichik and E. Ubilava (by 3), T. Georgadze (2).
